Waupun, WI – The Waupun Area School District Board of Education and Administration are pleased to announce they broke ground on the new athletic complex during a formal celebration on Wednesday, May 3 with hundreds of District residents in attendance. Site improvements for the 15.8 acre athletic complex consists of a nine lane track, soccer field, 1000 seat bleachers expandable to 1500 seats, eight tennis courts, and 195 parking stalls to accommodate spectators.
CG Schmidt, the district’s consultant and construction manager, worked hard to encourage local subcontractor involvement. The Board was committed to breaking bid packages into smaller manageable pieces for local subs and partnering smaller firms with larger firms as necessary to complete the work. The Board is continuing to refine the bidding process to further engage and employ district residents.
The first BID package for the Athletic Fields was released to all subcontractors the week of March 20 through electronic communication via iSqFt, the construction software used to manage the bidding process. Requests for BID documents were also made available on the District website or through stopping by the District office. The work included in BID Package 1 was erosion control, site access and security, demolition, water and sewer lateral, storm sewer and underdrain, earthwork, landscaping, concrete work, asphalt pavement, fencing and gates, restoration, athletic equipment, site lighting, power supply and scoreboard. To date, 58% of the work was awarded to local businesses or firms employing people who live in the District.
As part of CG Schmidt’s standard bidding practices, all firms need to be pre-qualified with their Risk Management Department. If any local subcontractors or businesses are interested in submitting on the next BID packages, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to start the pre-qualification process. Firms will then be added to CG Schmidt’s bidders list. If you have specific questions on any of the projects, please call CG Schmidt directly at (608) 255-1177.
CG Schmidt works to ensure the District has adequate BID coverage for all categories. As a result, they are encouraging local subcontractors who are looking for more information on the prequalification process and the BID packages being released to please attend one of two subcontractor engagement meetings on May 17 and 18 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Education Services Center, 950 Wilcox Street. Sandwiches and refreshments will be served. Please notify CG Schmidt of your intentions to attend the meetings by emailing Nancy Cutting at email@example.com, or contacting her at (608) 630-0803.
The Board encourages members of the Waupun and Fox Lake communities to attend the remaining two groundbreaking events in celebration of the formal start of construction and renovations for Meadow View Primary and SAGES.

Since the facilities referendum was approved overwhelmingly by the community on November 8, the District has been working closely with staff from Eppstein Uhen Architects (EUA) and CG Schmidt Construction to confirm the project’s scope and establish the overall construction schedule (see sidebar). The design process has begun in earnest with the first phase known as Schematic Design, which is a highly collaborative effort between district staff, teachers and architects from EUA. Schematic design includes developing detailed drawings that visually represent all of the different projects underway. This stage typically takes between two to four months to complete and is on schedule for completion by the end of March. Further design will continue in the coming months, leading to the development of construction documents that will be used in the public bidding process later this spring. Groundbreaking celebrations for the new additions at Meadow View Primary, SAGES School, and the Jr. /Sr. High School are expected to take place before the end of the school year.
