At Waupun Area High School, we have a class called Senior Democratic Seminar. The main purpose of this class is to get out in the community and try to improve it. We split into groups and my group members were Morgan Brown, Haley Scholten, Conner Kamphuis, Treylen Richter and Quintin Winterfeldt. We started this project in September and we wanted to honor the veterans for Veterans Day. We first talked to Frank Mesa who is the commander of the VFW Post 6709. He was a huge help and gave us a list of the members and their information. We presented our idea to the veterans at an American Legion meeting and they liked the idea. For the banners we wanted the names of more local veterans. We used their names, where they served, and what rank they were. Treylen Richter handled the information and created the banner on a computer. We got a price estimate of $250 for both banners from Mr. Seichter. We covered the price of the banners with sponsors. Our sponsors were Homan Auto Sale, WDS Construction, and K Brown Plumbing. Once we had all the information and the layout was completed, we had Warrior Fabrication print out the actual banners. They came out to be two 5x10 banners. We showed our appreciation by putting the companies that sponsored us on both banners. We first presented the finished banners to the veterans at the Veterans Breakfast ran by Waupun FFA. We hung the banners outside of the City Hall on November 9th with the help of Jeff Daane. The banners are still outside of City Hall today. The project turned out to be quite a success, so we plan on passing it to another SDS group next trimester. For the veterans that weren’t on the first banners, they will be included for the next ones. We plan on printing off slips for veterans that want to be on the next banners. They will be located at the American Legion. If that doesn’t work, then the veterans can text Kylle Hraban at (920)-344-0072. The information that we need goes as follows: Veteran Name, where they served, and rank. It doesn’t just have to be the veteran filling out the information. If family members would like to honor their loved veteran then they can also fill out a slip or text the information.
