WAUPUN — Years ago Waupun social studies teachers had a brainstorm. As their lessons involve government, people and cultures around the world, why not make a local connection? Why not devise a program that would benefit kids, the schools and the community around them?
The Senior Democratic Seminar was born, connecting all three and allowing high school students the chance to benefit their city in ways that might be felt for generations to come.
The seminar concept originated in 2011, and was implemented as a senior requirement in 2014. This year, 120 seniors took the seminar offered to smaller groups each trimester. Matt Dickhut is a member of the social studies teaching staff, and has been in charge of the program for the past five years.
